CCA Oregon Launches Ballot Initiative

to Recover Oregon's Iconic Salmon Runs

The Protect Our Salmon Act would ban the use of gill nets and tangle nets in Oregon waters, including the Columbia River.  The Act calls for the use of commercial fishing practices that selectively harvest returning hatchery fish, while protecting endangered wild salmon, steelhead and other species.

More information about gillnets and their impact on marine life:

Ghost net:  A lost or abandoned gillnet, which keeps catching and killing marine life. Just one of the many disadvantages of using gillnets to harvest Columbia River salmon and sturgeon, and as this video shows – a problem that’s been around for a long time.

Drop Outs: The photos below depict the damage done to sturgeon and salmon that encounter a gill or tangle net and manage to escape.  In most cases, the fish die from the damage or can't reproduce.
